The Language of the Soul

A beautiful song from the Tamil movie 'Mozhi' (English: Language). A wonderful melodious tune by Vidayasagar and superb rendition by singer Balram. The beauty of the song really lies in its lyrics penned by Vairamuthu .

Kaatrin Mozhi Oliyaa? Isaiyaa?
Poovin Mozhi Niramaa? Manamaa?
Kadalin Mozhi Alaiyaa? Nuraiyaa?
Kaadhal Mozhi Vizhiyaa? Idhazhaa?

Iyarkaiyin Mozhigal Purinthuvidil
Manitharin Mozhigal Thevai illai
Idhayathin Mozhigal Purinthuvidil
Manitharku Mozhiye Thevai illai....

Kaatrin Mozhi Oliyaa? Isaiyaaa?
Poovin Mozhi Niramaa? Manamaa?

Kaatru Veesum bothu Thisaigal Kidayaathu
Kaadhal Pesum bothu Mozhigal Kidaiyaathu
Pesum Vaarthai Pola Mounam Puriyaathu
Kangal Pesum Vaarthai Kadavul Ariyaathu
Ulavi Thiriyum Kaatruku Uruvam Theeta Mudiyaathu
Kadhal Pesum Mozhiyellam Sabthakootil Adangaathu

Iyarkaiyin Mozhigal Purinthuvidil
Manitharin Mozhigal Thevai illai
Idhayathin Mozhigal Purinthuvidil
Manitharku Mozhiye Thevai illai....

Kaatrin Mozhi.....

Vaanam Pesum Pechu Thuliyaai Veliyaagum
Vaanavillin Pechu Niramaai Veliyaagum
Unnmai Oomai Aanal Kaneer Mozhi Aagam
Pennmai Oomai Aanal Naanam Mozhi Aagum
Osai Thoongum Jaamathil Ucchi Meengal Mozhiyaagum
Aasai Thoongum Idhayathil Asaivu Kooda Mozhiyaagum

Iyarkaiyin Mozhigal Purinthuvidil
Manitharin Mozhigal Thevai illai
Idhayathin Mozhigal Purinthuvidil
Manitharku Mozhiye Thevai illai....

Kaatrin Mozhi.....

  1. Great lyrics indeed! The Tamil-lover in me can't resist typing out a translation, though any translation of a song of this depth will inevitably sound shallow. It's a somewhat loose translation hoping to capture the mood.

Is the message of the breeze merely sound, or is it a deeper melody?

Is the flower's message in its outer colours, or in its inner fragrance?

Does the sea speak to us through its roaring waves or merely through bursting bubbles?

Is true love expressed through a glance, or hidden behind an eyelid?

Once the language of Nature is understood, do we need man-made languages at all?

When the message of the heart is understood by all, why would men need language at all?

The wind needs no road-maps in its travel of all the directions.
The message of the heart needs no translations.

Words can be understood, but silence is always a mystery. A silent message in a single gaze, could baffle even the gods.

Can we ever capture the untrammeled wind in the lines of a sketch? Can the message of love ever be reduced to the words of a language?

    The message of the sky is in each drop of dew;
The message of the rainbow is in every single hue.

Even if Truth is mute, tears are its message. If Womanhood is mute, modesty is its unmistakable message.

The stillest of ponds has its own story, in the frolicking fish within. The least passionate of hearts has its own story, told through its faintest stirrings.

  2. Thanks for the translation Arvind! I hope this translation helps non-tamil speakers to understand the song.

Do watch the mozhi if you get a chance to. It is a simple yet touching movie.
